Frank Barrett

I was born in Montreal and grew up in Otterburn Park, on Montreal’s South Shore. I met my wife, Sylvie, at Dawson College more than 38 years ago (married for 35 years) and we have two daughters and 3 grandchildren, with our 4th on the way. I hold a B.A. Specialization in Economics and an M.A. in Public Administration.

We moved to Ottawa in 1985, when I started working as a policy analyst with Energy, Mines and Resources (now Natural Resources Canada). I spent most of my career with the Office of the Auditor General, where I was an audit principal for a decade before I retired in 2016.

Sylvie and I have been active members of St. Mary’s since we came to the parish in 1986. I joined the Finance Council when I retired in 2016 and began Chairing it in 2018. Over the years I’ve been active in leadership of our Small Christian Communities, the Knights of Columbus, and various other ministries within the Parish.

What I love about St. Mary’s

I love that, through many iterations, St. Mary’s continues to focus on spiritual growth and openness to the Holy Spirit. We’re continuingly encouraged to grow in personal holiness, love for one another, and to become better at welcoming the stranger and sharing the Gospel with all whom the Lord puts in our path.

I also really appreciate the renewed focus on developing our leadership skills. The emphasis on building a united leadership team has had a terrific impact on unifying ministry heads and parishioners in general.

Favourite saint

I invoke many Saints during my Rosary, but St. Gabriel (Patron Saint of Communications) is my (middle) namesake and my go-to Saint for so many of life’s key moments.

Favourite Ottawa lunch spot

Heart and Crown on Preston – great patio and near the parish. I also enjoy backyard BBQs in the summer. Mostly, I enjoy eating outside anywhere if weather at all permits, particularly if there is a view.

Favourite travel destinations

Whatever next adventure lies ahead. Certainly I love Ireland, but there are also many great pilgrimage sites like Rome, the Holy Land, Lourdes, Fatima and Medjugoje where the Lord has touched me. I’ve seen many very interesting places in Europe and there are far more that I have not yet seen. Of Course, one can spend a lifetime exploring all the wonders and Blessings within Canada.

Favourite movie

I enjoy many good comedies. Action and adventure movies are also fun.

On my birthday, don’t give me…

. . . anything that is much trouble. I much prefer spending time with people than thinking about gifts per se.
