Fr. Ken Lao, CC

I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. I come from a Chinese family and I am the eldest of 6 children. I studied for my elementary and high school in a Chinese Catholic school in Manila. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) in 1993 and my Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from De La Salle University in 2000 in Manila. Despite studying in Catholic Schools and attending mass on Sundays, I was not into my faith. I was looking for fulfillment in other places. It was until I joined a Catholic prayer group in my last year of University that I had a conversion of faith and an encounter with Jesus .

In 2002, I had the opportunity to work as Plant Manager in a snack food company in China. My five years of working in China was a time of deepening of faith for me. I regularly watched EWTN and I started practicing my Catholic Faith. It was in 2006 that I started to feel called to the priesthood. A sister in China recommended the Companions of the Cross, a community of Catholic priests, after she watched Fr. Bob Bedard, the founder of the Companions of the Cross, being interviewed on EWTN. I was advised by that sister that the best way to discern if it was the right choice for me is to try it. So in 2007, I resigned from my work in China and in March of 2008 I arrived in Canada as an immigrant.

On August 15, 2008, I joined the Companions of the Cross in Ottawa. I was ordained to the priesthood on June 6, 2015 and I spent my first two years as Associate Pastor at St. Timothy Catholic Church in Toronto. I was then assigned to be the Pastoral Administrator at Holy Trinity Pastoral Unity in Halifax, NS in 2017, before receiving my present assignment as Associate Pastor here at St. Mary’s Parish in Ottawa.

What I love about St. Mary’s

There are a lot of good, solid disciples and leaders who are the foundation of the renewal that we are trying to bring to the parish.
